I can remember a particular situation in which someone spoke a very unkind word to me. It was really hurtful, and it has stuck with me for a long time. Recently, as I was praying about this situation, the Lord showed me that the very word that they spoke to me applied to them as well. Meaning that, in their ignorance and lack of reasoning, they did not realize that if this word was true for me, then it was also, by default, true for them.
There are so many scriptures in the Bible that instruct and warn us to be very careful of the words that we speak. The reality is that there are certain situations where you can speak a word of condemnation over someone else’s life, and condemn your own in the process.
In this post, I want to highlight three very important Biblical scriptures on this topic:
- Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. James 1: 19
- Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18: 21
- 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matthew 12: 36-37
In light of the truth of God’s Word, as for me, I really strive to let my words be few, in terms of other people. In all honesty, this can be challenging, because as humans, we all have our thoughts and opinions. However, I have found that the more that I focus on my own life, the less time and energy that I have to speak on the lives of others.
My goal is to simply be kind to others, and let God handle the rest.
